How to Survive Florida Winter (Home Edition)
Even Florida freezes over. Although this is an uncommon occurrence compared to the north, it's always a good idea to be prepared. Here is a short checklist to get your property winter ready:
Cover plants/trees during freezes
You won't have to do this very often, but it is vital if the temperature drops below freezing. With this winter rough patch, you want your beautiful plants to thrive long after the cold has left their leaves.
Seal any cold air leaks
Cold air can leak from cracks near windows and doors. We recommend using caulk or some sort of weatherstrip to seal any openings where cold air can get through. You can also add a draft stopper to the bottom of your exterior doors to stop unwanted air from coming in.
Clean out your gutters and down spouts
Don't underestimate this step. Cleaning out your gutters and downspouts can stop debris from building up and causing mold on your home. Winter is when debris falls from trees here in Florida. It's important to clean out your gutters before and after the winter season.
Get your chimney cleaned
It's probably been a while since you last used your fireplace. If you plan on cozying up on those freezing nights, make sure to clean out your chimney. The last thing you want is a chimney fire due to deposit build-up or animals living in the chimney.
Change out air filters
Make sure your air conditioning is running efficiently during the winter. To accomplish this, we recommend regularly changing the AC filter.
Reverse direction of ceiling fan
Clockwise moving ceiling fans move warm air down, keeping your home warm without having to use your air conditioning.
